August's Best Dive Spots: Yakushima 32.7m vs Yonaguni 27.4m
2026-03-16
August is the peak of Japan's diving season. Water temperatures hit their annual maximum, and island sites reach their best visibility of the year. We analyzed our database of over 46,000 observations to compile the August visibility ranking.
August Visibility Ranking
| Rank | Site | Avg Visibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yakushima | 32.7m | n=3, small sample caveat |
| 2 | Yonaguni | 27.4m | Large dataset, highly reliable |
| 3 | Kerama | 21.2m | Easy access from Okinawa main island |
| 4 | Ishigaki | 21.0m | Overlaps with manta season |
| 5 | Hachijojima | 17.3m | Closest island from Tokyo |
| 6 | Ito | 15.0m | Day-trip from Kanto |
| 7 | IOP / Izu Oceanic Park | 12.3m | Mainland sites dip in summer |
Yakushima's Stunning 32.7m
Yakushima tops the August ranking, but the sample size of just 3 observations warrants caution. That said, Yakushima sits directly in the path of the Kuroshio Current, so visibility exceeding 30m in summer is not implausible. We expect this figure to be validated as more data accumulates.
Yonaguni 27.4m: Reliably Outstanding
Yonaguni is one of our most data-rich sites, making the 27.4m August average highly reliable. As Japan's westernmost island, it receives maximum benefit from the Kuroshio, maintaining 20m+ visibility year-round. August represents one of its best months.
Summer Islands vs Mainland
The August data highlights a stark divide between islands and mainland. Islands like Yonaguni (27.4m), Kerama (21.2m), and Ishigaki (21.0m) consistently deliver 20m+ visibility, while mainland IOP manages only 12.3m. Mainland sites in summer suffer from plankton blooms and nutrient-rich river runoff, making summer their lowest-visibility season.
Islands, by contrast, are dominated by open-ocean water with relatively low plankton influence, so summer becomes their visibility peak.
August Dive Planning Tips
- For maximum clarity, go to the islands: Yonaguni, Kerama, and Ishigaki offer reliable 20m+ visibility
- On the mainland, Ito holds up well: At 15.0m, it offers relatively good visibility for a mainland site
- Watch for typhoons: August is typhoon season, and flight cancellations are a real risk. Islands have limited alternative transport, so build buffer days into your schedule
- Mind the sample size: Figures from sites like Yakushima (n=3) may not reflect the true average
Summary
- Yakushima leads August at 32.7m (but n=3, interpret with caution)
- Yonaguni at 27.4m is the most reliable top performer
- Island sites (Kerama 21.2m, Ishigaki 21.0m) consistently exceed 20m
- Mainland sites decline in summer (IOP 12.3m)
- The island-mainland visibility gap is widest in summer
