Kashiwajima Water Temperature Guide — When Does the Kuroshio Arrive?

2026-03-09

Located at the western tip of Kochi Prefecture, Kashiwajima is one of Japan's premier macro diving destinations. Sitting at the boundary between temperate and subtropical zones, this area directly benefits from a branch of the Kuroshio Current, hosting an astonishing diversity of marine life. Over 1,000 fish species have been recorded here, making it one of the most biodiverse dive sites in Japan.

Our database tracks water temperature data for Kashiwajima, which we have analyzed to reveal temperature patterns and the optimal times when the Kuroshio's warm influence peaks.

Monthly Temperature Trends

Compare Kashiwajima with Kushimoto (southernmost Honshu) and Izu Oceanic Park. All three sit within the Kuroshio's sphere of influence, but each receives it differently.

Kashiwajima's Temperature Pattern

Our data reveals a clear annual pattern:

  • Winter minimum: 17.0°C in February. A drysuit or thick wetsuit is needed
  • Spring warming: From 17.2°C in March, temperatures climb to 19.7°C by May
  • Summer peak: Up to 24.7°C in August. A 5mm wetsuit is comfortable
  • Autumn sweet spot: 24.4-25.5°C in September-October for best conditions

When Does the Kuroshio Arrive?

The Kuroshio Current is the primary driver of Kashiwajima's water temperature. This powerful warm current flows along Japan's southern coast, maintaining surface temperatures of 27-29°C in summer and around 20°C even in winter.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's Kuroshio data, the branch current approaches closest to Shikoku's southern coast from June through October. During this period, warm and clear Kuroshio water flows into Kashiwajima's dive sites, boosting both temperature and visibility. Visibility exceeding 20m is common during these months.

In winter and spring, the Kuroshio tends to pull further offshore, and temperatures drop to around 17°C. Compared to Kushimoto (16.5°C in winter), Kashiwajima (17.0°C) is slightly warmer, suggesting the Kuroshio's influence never fully disappears.

Best Season: August to October

The August-October window is the ideal time for diving at Kashiwajima, with all key conditions aligning:

  • Water temperature: 24-25°C, comfortable in a wetsuit
  • Kuroshio proximity: Enhanced visibility, often exceeding 20m
  • Macro life: Gobies, shrimp, crabs, and nudibranchs in abundance
  • Rare species: Subtropical species arrive on the Kuroshio Current

Kashiwajima's position at the temperate-subtropical boundary is its greatest asset: fish from both ecosystems coexist here. Pygmy seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish, and other photogenic macro subjects draw underwater photographers from across Japan.

Comparison with Kushimoto and IOP

Comparing three Kuroshio-influenced sites reveals interesting patterns:

  • Summer (Jul-Sep): Kashiwajima 23-25°C, Kushimoto 23-26°C, IOP 21-24°C — warmer further south as expected
  • Winter (Jan-Feb): Kashiwajima 17-18°C, Kushimoto 16-17°C, IOP 16°C — differences narrow as the Kuroshio's proximity becomes the key variable
  • Annual range: Kashiwajima spans about 8°C (17-25°C), similar to IOP (8°C). Kushimoto has a wider range of about 10°C (16-26°C)

Suit Recommendations

PeriodAvg. TempRecommended Suit
Dec-Mar17.0-19.8°CDrysuit or 6.5mm wetsuit
Apr-May18.2-19.7°C5mm + hooded vest
Jun-Jul21.3-23.0°C5mm wetsuit
Aug-Oct24.4-25.5°C5mm wetsuit (3mm in summer)
Nov22.3°C5mm + hooded vest
Planning tip: Kashiwajima's temperature depends on the Kuroshio's proximity. Check our water temperature forecast before your trip. The best season is August-October, but winter (December-March) is also rewarding with a drysuit — macro subjects are abundant and dive sites are uncrowded.
