Summer 15m+ Guaranteed: July-August Visibility Ranking
2026-03-16
Summer is peak diving season, but it is also when Pacific coast mainland sites hit their annual visibility low. For divers who want 15m+ visibility even in summer, we compiled a July-August average visibility ranking from our data.
July-August Visibility Ranking
1st: Yonaguni -- 26.9m
Yonaguni dominates even in summer with an average of 26.9m. Japan's westernmost island sits directly in the Kuroshio Current's path, maintaining stable high visibility year-round. It also coincides with hammerhead shark season, making it the ultimate summer diving destination.
2nd: Kerama -- 21.3m
The Kerama Islands average 21.3m in summer. The oligotrophic coral reef environment maintains high visibility year-round. Accessible as a day trip from Naha, it pairs perfectly with an Okinawa summer vacation.
3rd: Ishigaki -- 20.8m
Ishigaki Island averages 20.8m in summer. The start of manta season overlaps, offering both visibility and marine life. While typhoon risk exists, post-typhoon clarity can exceed 30m.
4th: Hachijojima -- 17.3m (August)
Hachijojima averages 17.3m in August -- the best summer visibility among mainland-accessible islands. Kuroshio influence keeps conditions stable, and the island is just 55 minutes by air from Tokyo. Sea turtle encounters are also common during this period.
5th: Ito -- 14.1m
Among mainland sites, Ito leads with 14.1m. Located in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, it benefits from a Kuroshio branch current. It is the rare mainland site offering near-15m visibility accessible as a day trip. Also famous for shark feeding dives.
6th: Akinohama (Oshima) -- 13.8m
Akinohama on Izu Oshima averages 13.8m in summer. While mainland Izu sites drop to around 10m, this island site maintains relatively higher visibility. About 1 hour 45 minutes by high-speed ferry from Tokyo.
7th: Izu Oceanic Park -- 12.0m
The popular mainland site Izu Oceanic Park averages 12.0m in summer -- well below its winter peak of 18.6m. However, excellent access and infrastructure keep it popular even in summer.
The Island vs Mainland Gap
The data makes it clear: consistently achieving 15m+ in summer is an island privilege. All three Okinawa sites (Yonaguni, Kerama, Ishigaki) exceed 20m. Hachijojima maintains 17m+. Meanwhile, the best mainland site (Ito) reaches only 14.1m -- close to 15m but not quite there.
For guaranteed summer clarity, an island trip is the most reliable choice. If budget or schedule constraints apply, Ito (best mainland visibility) or Hachijojima (excellent access from Tokyo) are your strongest options.
