Visibility & Water Temperature — Tips for the Best Days and Site Rankings
2026-03-09
When planning a dive, everyone wants both great visibility and comfortable water temperature. In practice, the window when both conditions align is surprisingly narrow. We analyzed over 46,000 days of data to find the "sweet spot" for each region of Japan, and ranked the sites where "perfect days" (15m+ visibility and 22°C+ temperature) happen most often.
Monthly Water Temperature by Region
Let's start by comparing monthly water temperatures across four representative areas. The patterns differ dramatically by region.
Izu Area: October Is the Golden Month
In Izu, the conventional wisdom is "winter = clear water" and "summer = warm water." But our data reveals that October offers the best balance of both.
- October water temp: Around 23°C average. Comfortable in a 5mm wetsuit
- October visibility: The summer plankton bloom subsides, and visibility rebounds sharply
In midsummer (July-August), the water reaches a pleasant 25°C, but as the Japan Meteorological Agency reports, Kuroshio Current meanders and increased rainfall tend to reduce visibility. Conversely, winter (January-February) often brings 20m+ visibility, but at 14-16°C, a drysuit is essential.
Okinawa Area: Summer Wins Hands Down
In Okinawa (Kerama, Ishigaki, etc.), the visibility-temperature trade-off barely exists. Summer (June-September) is the peak for both.
- Summer water temp: 28-29°C. A 3mm wetsuit or rash guard is sufficient
- Summer visibility: 25-30m+ on many days. Coral reef areas resist plankton-related turbidity
Winter (December-February) still offers 21-23°C water, but northerly winds can cancel boat trips and limit accessible dive sites. Check JMA weather forecasts for wind conditions as well.
Sea of Japan (Echizen, etc.): July-September Sweet Spot
Sea of Japan dive sites show the opposite pattern from the Pacific coast. While the Pacific peaks in winter clarity, the Sea of Japan achieves its best visibility in summer.
- July-September water temp: 25-27°C. Comfortable in a 5mm wetsuit
- July-September visibility: Calm summer weather brings the year's best conditions
Winter on the Sea of Japan coast brings harsh weather that often prevents diving entirely. Summer is truly the prime season for Sea of Japan diving.
Kushimoto / Kii Peninsula: Autumn Is Best
Kushimoto, at the southern tip of Honshu, stays warm year-round thanks to the Kuroshio Current. The best balance comes in September-November.
- Autumn water temp: 23-26°C (September) to 22-24°C (November). Wetsuits work well
- Autumn visibility: The Kuroshio approaches closely in autumn, delivering 15-20m+ visibility
According to the JMA Kuroshio information, visibility improves dramatically when the Kuroshio approaches the Kii Peninsula. Autumn brings both frequent Kuroshio proximity and comfortable temperatures.
Best Timing by Region
| Area | Best Period | Water Temp | Visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Izu | October | ~23°C | Recovering |
| Okinawa | Jun-Sep | 28-29°C | 25m+ |
| Sea of Japan | Jul-Sep | 25-27°C | Year's best |
| Kushimoto | Sep-Nov | 22-26°C | Kuroshio effect |
"Perfect Day" Site Rankings
Now let's look at which sites deliver the most "perfect days" — defined as visibility of 15m or more combined with water temperature at 22°C or above.
Monthly Temperature Trends (Ranked Sites)
Temperature Heatmap
1st: Kerama — Perfect Days Almost Year-Round
The Kerama Islands deliver an extraordinary combination: annual average visibility around 20m with minimum water temperatures above 21°C. The famous "Kerama Blue" clarity comes from nutrient-poor coral reef waters. Low plankton levels mean minimal seasonal variation — "any time is a good time" is Kerama's greatest advantage.
2nd: Ishigaki — Golden Period is Autumn
Ishigaki is warm year-round with generally good visibility. The sweet spot is September through November: water temperatures remain above 26°C, typhoon season subsides, and visibility stabilizes. This coincides with peak manta ray encounters.
3rd: Yonaguni — Stable but Strong Currents
Yonaguni's year-round 24-26°C temperatures and Kuroshio-enhanced visibility produce many perfect days. However, strong currents make this a challenging site for beginners. Even during winter hammerhead season, the water stays at 24°C — the scenario of "cold AND poor visibility" virtually never occurs here.
4th: Kushimoto — Best on Mainland, Target October
Kushimoto leads the mainland rankings. When the Kuroshio Current approaches, conditions can reach 20m+ visibility with 25°C+ temperatures. October is prime time. The catch: when the Kuroshio shifts offshore, both temperature and visibility can deteriorate rapidly. Checking our visibility forecast before booking is recommended.
5th: Kashiwajima — Macro Paradise Peaks Summer-Autumn
Kashiwajima in Kochi Prefecture sees its perfect days concentrated in summer through autumn, when a branch of the Kuroshio brings warm, clear water. Comfortable wetsuit diving runs roughly June through November.
IOP — The Classic Tradeoff
IOP exemplifies the inverse relationship between visibility and temperature. Winter delivers the best visibility at 16°C (drysuit required), while warm summer months bring visibility below 10m. Target October to early November for the best chance at both. This window is short, making AI-powered forecasts especially valuable.
Perfect Day Comparison
| Site | Perfect Day Frequency | Best Period | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kerama | High (year-round) | Any month | Consistent Kerama Blue |
| Ishigaki | High | Sep-Nov | Manta + clarity |
| Yonaguni | High | Any month | Strong currents |
| Kushimoto | Moderate | October | Kuroshio-dependent |
| Kashiwajima | Summer-Autumn | Jul-Oct | Macro paradise |
| IOP | Limited | Oct-Nov | Short best window |
For both visibility and temperature, aiming for just after summer's peak often yields the best results. Use our 7-day forecast to check the latest predictions and find your perfect dive window.
