Tier Characteristics

S Tier: A different world with 20m+ year-round

Overwhelming clarity in Okinawa and remote islands. Yonaguni averages 24.5m from 4,826 observations, consistently 20m+ year-round. Yakushima records 24.7m though with fewer observations (159). The Kuroshio's nutrient-poor water suppresses plankton growth.

A Tier: High clarity reachable from mainland

Kerama 19.3m, Hachijojima 17.1m — good balance of access and clarity. Ito at 15.9m makes A tier despite being in Chiba Prefecture, great news for Kanto divers.

B Tier: Best day-trip options

IOP 13.8m, Akinohama 14.3m — major sites reachable as day trips from Tokyo/Osaka. Winter can rival A tier visibility. Well-equipped facilities serve beginners to veterans.

C Tier: Winning on attractions beyond visibility

Mikomoto 12.3m is Japan's hammerhead shark mecca. Kushimoto 11.9m has the world's northernmost table coral. Average visibility, but unique marine life and terrain.

D Tier: Macro paradise, visibility is secondary

Hirasawa 8.8m, Tajiri 9.4m — modest visibility but incredibly rich macro life. Perfect for photo dives hunting nudibranch, shrimp, and crabs. Low visibility does not mean less fun.

Don't Choose a Site by Visibility Alone

This ranking is based solely on annual average visibility. Biodiversity, terrain interest, accessibility, cost, and crowding are all factors in a site's value. D-tier Hirasawa can be S-tier for beginner training and macro photography.

About the Data

Data is based on real observations from dive shop daily logs. Annual average visibility is the mean of all observations. Observation periods and counts vary by site. Sites with fewer observations (e.g., Yakushima with 159) may shift in ranking as more data is collected.
